How to check the spindle data connection

The data connection between SmartBench and the spindle is critical to operation. A failure in the signal integrity can cause a variety of symptoms.

At the spindle, shown below, check:

  • The data cable plug (A) is firmly pushed into the data socket

  • The thumbscrew lock (B) is firmly closed (apply at least ΒΌ of a turn). Some thread on the socket will still be exposed, but the thumbscrew should feel tight.

At the Z Head supply end, ensure that the plug is firmly pushed into the socket USB B-type socket (shown below):

Now test run your spindle. Whilst running, flex the cable at each socket to ensure that there are no weak connections. During flexing, a weak data connection will present as

  • A change in spindle speed

  • A false overload signal

A weak connection may be caused by either:

  • Data cable (replacement cables are available for purchase from here)

  • Spindle PCB socket

  • ZHead socket

If you need help identifying the cause, please contact customer support by submitting a support ticket with a video to illustrate the symptoms.
